Another King James Bible Believer

Is there a type of "faith" or "belief" in Jesus Christ that is NOT a saving faith?

Is there a type of "faith" or "belief" in Jesus Christ that is NOT a saving faith?

Yes, there most definitely is.  There is a type of “natural man” belief in God that many people have, that is NOT a true, Spirit produced faith that God himself gives to his elect.  “the faith of God’s elect” Titus 1:1

This is a natural, fleshly belief or faith in the existence of God like the one even the devils have.  The devils believe and tremble. James 2:19

Many people believe in the historical Jesus. That he existed and did many miracles and died on the cross and rose again. But they do not really believe that they themselves are lost sinners in BONDAGE to sin who deserve the wrath of God and that Christ alone can save them from their sins.

It is of great interest to see that in the gospel of John, which is the book in the entire Bible that by far more than any other mentions the word “believe”, that in this gospel we have at least 2 and possibly 3 instances of where some people “believed” but yet they did not have what we could call a saving faith.

We can clearly see this type of false belief in the gospel of John in chapter 8.

In John 8:30-32 we see: "As he spake these words, MANY BELIEVED ON HIM.  Then said Jesus to THOSE JEWS WHO BELIEVED ON HIM, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed:  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

And what was their reaction? "They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were NEVER IN BONDAGE o any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? (v.33)

34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because MY WORD HATH NO PLACE IN YOU.

38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. 39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

44 YE ARE OF YOUR FATHER THE DEVIL, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."

These Pharisees were “religious” and obviously believed in the existence of God, but they did NOT see themselves as being depraved sinners - “WE WERE NEVER IN BONDAGE" and they trusted in their religious upbringing and heritage, rather than in the Lord Jesus as their Saviour from sin - “we be Abraham’s seed”.

Thinking they were never IN BONDAGE they assumed that they were free. Perhaps free to exercise their "free will" to be able to choose for themselves to make that all important "personal decision to accept Jesus into their hearts." They did not recognize their utter depravity in being, as the Bible tells us,  "without strength" and "enemies" of God in their very nature. Romans 5:6-8.

A second example is found in John 2:23-25

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, MANY BELIEVED IN HIS NAME, WHEN THEY SAW THE MIRACLES WHICH HE DID.

24 BUT JESUS DID NOT COMMIT HIMSELF UNTO THEM, because he knew all men,

25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.”

Here it seems that they “believed” just because they saw the miracles that he did.  But they were not looking at Christ as the Saviour from their own SINS and from the wrath of God they deserved.

It is more like the “historical faith” that Jesus existed and did many miracles that many people today have regarding who he was.

And the third example of what might also be this type of “natural man” faith or belief that was of no redemptive value is seen in John 12:42-43

42“Nevertheless among the chief rulers also MANY BELIEVED ON HIM; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

What is true, saving faith and how do we get it?
