The Modern English Version 2014 - Just Another Perverted Bible Babble Buffet Pretender to the Throne.
The Modern English bible Introduction SAYS it "is a translation of the Textus Receptus and the Jacob ben Hayyim edition of the Masoretic Text, using the King James Version as the base manuscript."
This simply is NOT true in many cases, as we shall see. The MEV often rejects the Hebrew readings, and often mistranslates the Textus Receptus that underlies the King James Bible.
It is NOT "just like the KJB but in modern language", and this ongoing study will prove it. You can see the Modern English Version online for free (save your money) here -
By the way, they got the very first verse - Genesis 1:1 - wrong. See my study of Bible Babble in Genesis
The MEV rejects the Hebrew Masoretic readings in several places and often mistranslates it in others.
The MEV corrupts many sound Doctrines.
Micah 5:2 Did the Son of God have an "origin from ancient times" or "his goings forth are from everlasting"? Did He have a beginning or is He eternal?
Micah 5:2 "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; WHOSE GOINGS FORTH have been of old, FROM EVERLASTING."
MEV - "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, although you are small among the tribes of Judah, from you will come forth for Me one who will be ruler over Israel. His ORIGINS are from of old, FROM ANCIENT DAYS."
Revelation 19:8 KJB -"THE FINE LINEN IS THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF SAINTS."
MEV - "Fine linen IS THE RIGHTEOUS DEEDS OF THE SAINTS."
See - "The fine linen is the righteousness of saints" - Tyndale, Coverdale, Bishops' Bible, Geneva Bible, Third Millennium Bible
Revelation 19:8 MEV, NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV, NET, Catholic versions - "for the fine linen is THE RIGHTEOUS ACTS of the saints."
Revelation 18:20 KJB and Textus Receptus -
KJB - "Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and YE HOLY APOSTLES AND PROPHETS; for God hath avenged you on her."
The Modern English Version 2014 rejects the TR and follows the Westcott-Hort Critical Text instead, saying:
MEV - "Rejoice over her, O heaven and SAINTS AND APOSTLES AND PROPHETS, for God has avenged you against her."
See the whole article here -
Revelation 18:20 "ye holy apostles and prophets"
Romans 3:3 "the FAITH of God" or "the FAITHFULNESS of God" or "the PROMISE of God"?
KJB - For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make THE FAITH of God without effect?
Modern English Version (ESV, NIV, NKJV, NASB, NET, Jehovah Witness NWT, Catholic St. Joseph NAB, Catholic New Jerusalem bible) - "What if some did not believe? Would their unbelief nullify the FAITHFULNESS of God?"
Some Bible critics (none of whom believe that any bible in any language they can show us is the complete and inerrant words of God) complain about the King James Bible and tell us that "the FAITH of God" is a wrong translation that doesn't make much sense, and that it should be "the FAITHFULNESS of God"
The KJB is right and here is why.
Philippians 2:6-7 Not Robbery to be Equal With God, Made himself of No Reputation.
The Similarity of Modern Versions with the Jehovah Witness Version and the Catholic Bibles.
A Refutation of the Kenosis Theory - the idea that God emptied himself when He became a man.
KJB - "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, THOUGHT IT NOT ROBBERY TO BE EQUAL WITH GOD: but MADE HIMSELF OF NO REPUTATION, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men."
The phrase "thought it not robbery to be equal with God", as found in the King James Bible, clearly teaches that Jesus Christ was in fact God.
Modern English Version (ESV, NIV, NASB, NKJV 1979 edition) - 6.?who, being in the form of God, DID NOT CONSIDER EQUALITY WITH GOD SOMETHING TO BE GRASPED. 7. But HE EMPTIED HIMSELF, taking upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.?
Here is why the King James Bible is right, as always -
Hebrews 3:16 King James Bible - "For SOME, when they had heard, did provoke: HOWBEIT, NOT ALL that came out of Egypt by Moses."
Hebrews 3:16 Modern English Version (NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV, NET, Holman, modern Catholic versions, Jehovah Witness NWT) -
"For WHO were they that heard and rebelled? WAS IT NOT ALL those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?"
The MEV Ruins Three Messianic Prophesies
Haggai 2:7 KJB - "And I will shake all nations, and THE DESIRE OF ALL NATIONS SHALL COME:: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts."
Haggai 2:7 MEV - "And I will shake all the nations, and THEY WILL COME WITH THE WEALTH OF ALL NATIONS, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of Hosts."
Isaiah 66:5 KJB - "Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: BUT HE SHALL APPEAR TO YOUR JOY, and they shall be ashamed."
MEV - "Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at His word: Your brothers who hate you, who cast you out for My name's sake, said, "Let the Lord be glorified THAT WE MAY SEE YOUR JOY." Yet they shall be ashamed."
Daniel 9:26 - "And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, BUT NOT FOR HIMSELF."
MEV - "Messiah shall be cut off AND SHALL HAVE NOTHING."
See How to Destroy Messianic Prophecies - Three examples
Zachariah 5:6 and the ongoing Bible Babble Buffet Marathon.
Zechariah 5:6 KJB - (NASB, NKJV, The Koster Scriptures 1998, The New European Version 2010,) - "This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is THEIR RESEMBLANCE through all the earth."
ESV (RSV, NIV, Holman Standard 2009, Modern English Version 2014) - "And I said, "What is it?" He said, "This is the basket[a] that is going out." And he said, "This is THEIR INIQUITY[b] in all the land."
Then the ESV footnotes that this reading of "their iniquity" instead of "their resemblance" (appearance) comes from "One Hebrew manuscript, the Septuagint and the Syraic, but that most Hebrew manuscripts read "eye".
Actually their footnote is not entirely accurate either. The word used here is # 5869 gah-yin and it has multiple meanings besides "eye". It can also mean "RESEMBLANCE" or "appearance", as well as "sight", "before, in the sight of, fountain, well, color" and many other things.
The NASB (which got it right in this verse) has translated this Hebrew word as "appearance" 4 times and as "outward appearance" one time and as "SIGHT" 277 times.
The NIV 1984 edition also has translated it as "appearance" and "sight" many times. BUT here in Zachariah 5:6 the NIV says: "It is a basket. And he added, This is THE INIQUITY OF THE PEOPLE throughout the land." Then it footnotes "Or appearance". Well, which is it?
Which reading are they going to follow, the Hebrew Masoretic reading or the so called Greek Septuagint?
Even the ESV has translated this Hebrew word as "appearance" in 1 Samuel 16:7 - "But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look on his APPEARANCE or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward APPEARANCE, but the Lord looks on the heart."
Dan Wallace's NET version does not agree with the ESV or the NIV but says: "Moreover, he said, "This is their "EYE" throughout all the earth."
The Modern English Version 2014 lies to us when they tell us that their MEV "is a translation of the Jacob ben Hayyim edition of the Masoretic Text" because here, as well as in many other places, they did not follow it. Instead they have (with no footnotes) "This represents THEIR INIQUITY throughout the land."
The previous Douay-Rheims bible 1610 and the Douay Version 1950 both read "This is THEIR EYE in all the earth."
BUT now the St. Joseph New American bible 1970 and the New Jerusalem bible 1985 have changed this to read: "This is THEIR GUILT throughout all the country."
Then the New Jerusalem footnotes that "GUILT" comes from the Greek Septuagint, but that the Hebrew reads "eye".
Agreeing with the KJB and the Hebrew Masoretic text of "this is THEIR RESEMBLANCE (or appearance) through all the earth." are the following Bible versions - Geneva Bible "this is the sight of them through all the earth", The Revised Version 1885 - "This is their resemblance in all the land.", Darby 1890, the ASV 1901, Young's 1898, The Ancient Hebrew Bible 1907 - "This is THEIR RESEMBLANCE", 1936 Hebrew Publishing Company bible - "their resemblance", The NKJV 1982 - this is their resemblance", The Word of Yah Bible 1993, the NASB 1995 - "This is THEIR APPEARANCE in all the land.", The Koster Scriptures 1998, the World English Bible 2000, The Mebust Bible 2007, the Jubilee Bible 2010, The Hebrew Transliteration Bible 2010 - "their resemblance through all the eretz.", The New European Version 2010, the Common English Bible 2011- "this is how it appears", The Orthodox Jewish Bible 2011 - "This is their appearance throughout kol ha'aretz.", The Bond Slave Version 2012, The Biblos Bible 2013 - "this is their RESEMBLANCE in all the earth", the ISV (International Standard Version) 2014, The Hebrew Names Version 2014 and the Tree of Life Version 2015.

More False Doctrines in the MEV
Heretic or A Divisive Person?
According to the Modern Versions even Jesus Himself should be avoided because He was divisive; but He was not a heretic.
Titus 3:10 KJB - "A man that is an HERETIC after the first and second admonition reject; knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself."
Heretic - Wycliffe, Tyndale, Coverdale, Geneva Bible, Revised Version, Third Millennium Bible.
Titus 3:10 MEV (NKJV) - "Reject A DIVISIVE MAN after the first and second admonition."
A Divisive Person - NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV, NET
Deuteronomy 32:5 Are they God's children or not his children?
Deuteronomy 32:5 KJB - "They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation. Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?"
MEV - "They have acted corruptly to Him: THEY ARE NOT HIS CHILDREN, but blemished".Is He not your father, who has bought you?"
(Can you see the contradiction?) See
Jeremiah 8:8 "the pen of the scribes is in vain", Muslims & Bogus bible versions. Have God's words been corrupted? Many Modern Versions say Yes.
KJB - "How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? LO, CERTAINLY IN VAIN MADE HE IT; THE PEN OF THE SCRIBES IS IN VAIN."
MEV (NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV) - "How do you say, "We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Certainly THE LYING PEN OF THE SCRIBES HAS MADE IT INTO A LIE."
Acts 17:22 "Too Superstitious or Very Religious"?
Acts 17:22 KJB - "Then Paul stood in the midst of MARS' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things YE ARE TOO SUPERSTITIOUS...whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you."
MEV - (NKJV, ESV, NIV, NASB, modern Catholic versions) - "Then Paul stood in the midst of THE AREOPAGUS and said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are VERY RELIGIOUS."
2 Corinthians 2:17 "Corrupt" or "Peddle" the word of God?
King James Bible - "For we are not as many, which CORRUPT the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ."
NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV, MEV "For we are not, as so many, PEDDLING the word of God..."
The Geneva Bible 1587 was deficient here (as in other places) and read: "We are not as many which MAKE MERCHANDISE OF the word of God".
Genesis 3:5 "ye shall be as gods" or "you will be like God"?
Genesis 3:5 KJB - "then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."
NKJV, ESV, NIV, NASB, MEV, Holman Standard, Jehovah Witness NWT - "your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.?
2 Samuel 23:5 "Although my house BE NOT SO WITH GOD; YET he hath made with me an everlasting covenant"
The MEV, NKJV, ESV, NIV, NASB all get this wrong. See "The Grace of God Destroyed."
MEV -"Is not my house like this with God? For He made an everlasting covenant with me."
#4. Isaiah 35:8 "THE WAYFARING MEN, THOUGH FOOLS, SHALL NOT ERR THEREIN."
The MEV, NIV, NASB, NET all get this wrong. The ESV, NKJV got it right.
MEV -"it shall be for the wayfaring men, AND FOOLS SHALL NOT WANDER ON IT."
See "The Grace of God Destroyed."
Modern English Version (MEV) Genesis 27:39 - the opposite of the KJB.
Genesis 27:39 KJB - "And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling SHALL BE THE FATNESS OF THE EARTH, AND OF THE DEW OF HEAVEN FROM ABOVE"
Genesis 27:39 MEV - Isaac his father answered and said to him,"Your dwelling shall be AWAY FROM the fatness of the earth and AWAY FROM the dew of heaven from above."
See Bible Babble in Genesis
Genesis 30:27 KJB - And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned BY EXPERIENCE that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake.
Modern English Version Genesis 30:27 - Laban said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. For I have learned BY DIVINATION that the Lord has blessed me on account of you."
See my study on "Genesis- Yea, hath God said?" Scroll down till you come to Genesis 30:27
"He cut them with saws" or " He put them to work with saws?"
2 Samuel 12:31 and 1 Chronicles 20:3 - Did David cut his enemies with saws and kill them and burn their bodies in the brick kilns, or did he just "put them to work" with saws and made them go to the brick works to labor there?
Obviously, both readings and meanings are not the same and both cannot be what God recorded in His words as historical fact.
2 Samuel 12:31 King James Bible - "And he brought forth the people that were therein, and PUT THEM UNDER SAWS, AND UNDER HARROWS OF IRON, AND UNDER AXES OF IRON, AND MADE THEM PASS THROUGH THE BRICK-KILN: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem."
1 Chronicles 20:3 - KJB - "And he brought out the people that were in it, AND CUT THEM WITH SAWS, AND WITH HARROWS OF IRON, AND WITH AXES. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem."
NKJV (MEV 2014) - 2 Samuel 12:31 - "And he brought out the people who were in it, and PUT THEM TO WORK WITH SAWS AND IRON PICKS AND IRON AXES, AND MADE THEM CROSS OVER TO THE BRICK WORKS."
(As a side note, the word for "brickkiln" is found only three times in the Hebrew Old Testament. It is # 4404 mal-behn and all three times it is translated as "brickkiln" in the KJB but the NKJV has "brick works" here, "brick courtyard" in Jeremiah 43:9 and "brick kiln" in Nahum 3:14. A brickkiln is a furnace or oven for baking bricks.)
NKJV (MEV 2014) - 1 Chronicles 20:3 - "And he brought out the people who were in it, and PUT THEM TO WORK WITH SAWS, WITH IRON PICKS, AND WITH AXES. So David did to all the cities of the people of Ammon."
The NKJV then has a very misleading footnote. It says: "Septuagint reads "cut them", thus implying that the KJB got this reading from the Greek Septuagint. It didn't.
It is the Hebrew text itself that reads as the KJB has it. The so called Greek Septuagint just happened to get it right as well. But the NKJV footnote is WRONGLY implying that the KJB got its reading from the Septuagint. It didn't. It comes from the Hebrew text, and it is the NKJV along with the perverted ESV, NIV, NET, MEV, Holman Standard and Jehovah Witness NWT and modern Catholic versions that simply CHANGE THE TEXT.
See why the KJB got it right, here -
MEV Rejects the Hebrew Texts.
Does Jeremiah 27:1 read JEHOIAKIM (Hebrew texts, RV, ASV, NKJV, KJB, ISV, Douay-Rheims, St. Joseph New American Bible 1970) or ZEDEKIAH (MEV, RSV, NIV, NASB, ESV, NET, Holman, Catholic New Jerusalem 1985) ?
Jeremiah 27:1 KJB - In the beginning of the reign of JEHOIAKIM the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word unto Jeremiah from the LORD"
Modern English Version 2014 - In the beginning of the reign of ZEDEKIAH the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord?
See my article on this here - Jeremiah 27:1 JEHOIAKIM or ZEDEKIAH? Has the Hebrew text been corrupted?
Jeremiah 31:3 KJB "The Lord hath appeared of old UNTO ME, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee."
Jeremiah 31:3 Modern English Version (MEV) - "The Lord has appeared TO HIM from afar, saying: Indeed, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you."
Hebrew is "TO ME". The MEV followed the Greek LXX which says "to him"
1 Samuel 13:1 KJB - "Saul reigned ONE year; and when he had reigned TWO years over Israel,

1 Samuel 13:21 KJB - "Yet THEY HAD A FILE for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads."

Three or Thirty?
2 Samuel 23:18 KJB (Hebrew texts, Geneva, NKJV, NIV, NET, Holman) - "And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among THREE. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred, and slew them, and had the name among THREE."
2 Samuel 23:18 - Modern English Version - "Now Abishai, the brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah, was chief of the THIRTY"
The 7th day in Judges 14:15 (KJB, NKJV, RV, ASV, Douay-Rheims) or the 4th day (RSV, ESV, NASB, NIV, NET, St. Joseph NAB, Catholic New Jerusalem, Jehovah Witness NWT) or "the NEXT day" ISV (they just made this up!)
Judges 14:15 KJB - "And it came to pass on THE SEVENTH DAY, that they said unto Samson's wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?"
MEV - On THE FOURTH DAY they said to Samson's wife, "Trick your groom into telling us the riddle, or we will burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you invited us to steal what we have? Is that not so?"
See "Judges 14:15 - The Seventh Day or The Fourth Day? - a Puzzle inside a Riddle. Is the Hebrew text wrong?"
1 Chronicles 29:15
1 Chronicles 29:15 KJB - "For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on earth are as a shadow, AND THERE IS NONE ABIDING."
Modern English Version (NKJV, NIV, NASB) - "For we are aliens and pilgrims before You, As were all our fathers; Our days on earth are as a shadow, AND WITHOUT HOPE."
Does 2 Chronicles 36:9 read that Jehoiachin was 8 years old when he began to reign (Hebrew texts, KJB, NASB, NKJV, RV, ASV, KJB, RSV, NRSV, ESV 2001 edition, ISV, Douay-Rheims) or he was 18 years old (MEV, NIV, Holman, NET, ESV 2007 edition!!! and once again the Catholic St. Joseph NAB and the New Jerusalem and the Jehovah Witness NWT 1961 and 2013 editions)?
2 Chronicles 36:9 KJB Jehoiachin was EIGHT years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord.
MEV 2 Chronicles 36:9 - "Jehoiachin was EIGHTEEN years old when he began to reign,"
See How Old Was Jehoiachin, 8 or 18?
or that when God raised the Lord Jesus from the dead it is stated in Acts 13:33 "this day have I begotten thee" (KJB, NASB, NKJV, RV, RSV, NRSV, ESV, Douay-Rheims, St. Joseph NAB)
or "today I have become your Father" (MEV, NIV, Holman, NET, ISV, Catholic New Jerusalem, Jehovah Witness NWT).
MEV - Acts 13:33 You are My Son; TODAY I HAVE BECOME YOUR FATHER.

John 1:28 "in BETHABARA" or "in BETHANY"?
John 1:28 KJB - "These things were done in BETHABARA beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing."
Modern English Version 2014 (ESV, NASB, NIV, Holman, NET, Jehovah Witness NWT, Catholic St. Joseph NAB 1970, New Jerusalem bible 1985) - "These things took place in BETHANY beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing."
This is another clear example of where the Modern English Version does NOT follow the Textus Receptus that underlies the King James Bible.
See the whole study here -
Matthew 12:40 "the whale" or "the great fish"?
KJB - "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the WHALE'S belly: so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
MEV - "in the belly of the GREAT FISH"
Here is why the KJB is right and the MEV is not.
KJB - and they were FORGOTTEN
MEV - Then I saw the wicked buried. They used to go in and out of the holy place, and they were PRAISED in the city where they did works. This is also vanity.

Genesis 36:24 KJB - "And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found THE MULES in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father."
MEV - "These were the children of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. This was the Anah who found THE WATER in the wilderness as he fed the donkeys of Zibeon, his father."

2 Samuel 14:14 "Not respect persons" or "not take away life"?
KJB - "For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; NEITHER DOTH GOD RESPECT ANY PERSON: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him."

Jeremiah 10:5 KJB - "THEY ARE UPRIGHT AS THE PALM TREE"
Modern English Version 2014 - "THEY ARE AS A SCARECROW IN A CUCUMBER FIELD"
ESV - "THEIR IDOLS ARE LIKE SCARECROWS IN A CUCUMBER FIELD."
NIV 1978, 1984 editions - "Like A SCARECROW IN A MELON PATCH, their idols cannot speak"
NIV 2011 edition - "Like A SCARECROW IN A CUCUMBER PATCH, their idols cannot speak"
Jeremiah 10 is speaking about the idols of the heathen and tells the children of Israel not to be like them.
?2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
5 THEY ARE UPRIGHT AS THE PALM TREE, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.?
The Hebrew word here for "PALM TREE" is # 8560 tohmer, and is only used twice in the O.T. The other instance is in Judges 4:5 where we are told about the prophetess Deborah "And she dwelt under the PALM TREE". Even versions like the ESV, NIV, NASB etc. translate the word as "palm tree" in that place.
Strong's Complete Concordance - # 8560 tomer, from the same root as 8558; a PALM trunk; PALM TREE. Then if you look up # 8558 is says: "from an unused root meaning to be erect. A PALM TREE."
The Catholic Connection
However in this place the ESV, NIV, NASB, NET, Holman, Modern English Version 2014 and the modern Catholic versions like the St. Joseph NAB 1970 and the New Jerusalem bible 1985 read - "They are like SCARECROWS IN A CUCUMBER PATCH." - or "Scarecrows in a melon patch."
Likewise, the Jehovah Witness New World Translation reads: "They are like A SCARECROW OF A CUCUMBER FIELD, and cannot speak."
However the previous Douay-Rheims 1610 and Douay 1950 both read "palm tree" and now the 2009 Catholic Public Domain Version has gone back to - "They have been fabricated in the likeness of A PALM TREE"
Agreeing with the King James Bible's "they are upright as THE PALM TREE" are Wycliffe 1395, Coverdale 1535, the Great Bible 1540, Matthew's Bible 1549 - "It standeth as styfe as the PALMTREE", the Bishop's Bible 1568 - "It standeth as stiffe as the Palme tree", the Geneva Bible 1599 - "The idols stand up as the PALM TREE", Lamsa's translation of the Syriac Peshitta - "They are set upright as PALM TREES", Julia Smith Translation 1855, Noyes Translation 1869, the Revised Version 1881 - "They are like a PALM TREE", Darby 1890, Young's 1898 - "As A PALM they are stiff", the ASV 1901 - "They are like a PALM-TREE", Rotherham's Emphasized Bible 1902, The Word of Yah 1993, God's First Truth 1999, The Judaica Press Tanach 2004, the Context Group Version 2007, the Orthodox Jewish Bible 2011 - "They [the idols] are upright as the tomer (palm tree]", the KJV 21st Century 1994, the Third Millennium Bible 1998, Green's Literal 2005, Bond Slave Version 2008, the Concordant Literal Version, the 2012 Natural Israelite Bible - "They are upright, like A PALM TREE", the Hebraic Transliteration Scripture 2010, the Holy Scriptures VW Edition 2010, the New European Version 2010, the Online Interlinear 2010 (André de Mol), the Jubilee Bible 2010, The Orthodox Jewish Bible 2011, the Biblos Interlinear Bible 2013 - "They are UPRIGHT AS THE PALM TREE", The Work of God's Children Illustrated Bible 2011, the World English Bible 2012 and The Modern Literal Version 2017.
Foreign Language Bibles = KJB - "a PALM TREE"
Foreign language Bibles that follow the Hebrew text and also read ?PALM TREE? are the Spanish Sagradas Escrituras 1569, Cipriano de Valera 1602, the Reina Valera 1909-1995 and Reina Valera Gómez 2004 - "Erguidos están como PALMERA", the Portuguese Almeida Corrigida E Fiel 1681 and A Biblia Sagrada em Portugués - "Säo como a PALMEIRA", the German Schlachter Bible 2000 - "sie sind gedrechselten Palmbäumen gleich", the Tagalog Ang Dating Biblia - "Sila'y gaya ng puno ng PALMA", the Italian Diodati 1649 and La Nuova Diodati 1991 - "Son tratti diritti, a guisa di PALMA", the Albanian bible - "Idhujt qëndrojnë drejt si një palmë", the Lithuanian Bible - "Jie yra ties's kaip palm", the Hungarian Karoli Bible - "Olyanok, mint az egyenes pálmafa"
AND The Modern Greek Bible = "They are straight as THE PALM TREE , but they do not speak."
And the Hebrew Rashi Complete Tanach 2004 - "Like a PALM TREE? and the Hebrew Interlinear Old Testament - as the palm tree, upright They"
Where does this weird change from "a palm tree" to "a scarecrow in a cucumber patch" come from? Not the so called Greek LXX (It is really messed up in this section - it omits verses 6, 7, 8 and 10, and has two verse fives, neither one of which reads like the Hebrew or these modern Vatican Versions) nor the Syriac Peshitta, which reads just like the KJB has it - "They are set up straight as PALM TREES, but they do not speak."
The Pulpit Commentary tells us - "They are upright as the palm tree; rather, they are like a pillar (i.e. a scarecrow) in a field of cucumbers. This is the interpretation given to our passage in Ver. 70 of the apocryphal Epistle of Jeremiah (written in the Maccabean period, evidently with reference to our prophecy), and is much more striking than the rival translation, "like a palm tree".
So, in other words, it has nothing to do with the Hebrew text, which reads "palm tree" but with some APOCRYPHAL book that is not even in the Bible, and it is "an interpretaion" they like it because "it is much more striking" than that dull old "palm tree". Folks, this is how modern scholarship works.
John Gill comments: "They are upright as the palm tree, Being nailed to a post, or fastened to a pillar, or set upon a pedestal, and so stand erect without bending any way; and are like a palm tree, which is noted for its uprightness."
Jamieson, Fausset and Brown comment: -"5. upright" or, "They are of turned work, resembling a palm tree" [Maurer]. The point of comparison between the idol and the palm is in the pillar-like uprightness of the latter"
John Calvin translated it into Latin as "palm tree" - "Sicuti palma aequalis" and then comments: "They are indeed erect as the palm-trees; and thus there appears in them something remarkable: but they speak not."
Adam Clarke Commentary - "They are upright as the palm tree - As straight and as stiff as the trees out of which they are hewn."
Matthew Poole's Commentary - "They are upright as the palm tree; the nature of which is to grow upright and tall, without any branchings, till it comes to the top, thereby possibly representing majesty."
Some Other Weird Versions (so you can get a better sense of the meaning, don't ya know ;-)
The Ancient Roots Translinear bible 2008 says: "HAMMERED TO A DATE-PALM, it speaks nothing"
Interlinear Hebrew Scriptures 2012 (Mebust) - "LIKE A ROUNDED POST, THEY ARE, and they cannot speak"
The King James Bible is right, as always.
These are just a few of the MANY places the MEV either follows the wrong texts or has the completely wrong meaning and ends up teaching false doctrines.
Get the King James Holy Bible and stick to it. It is the only complete and inerrant Bible in the English language, and the Bible critics, bible agnostics, and unbelievers in the inerrancy of ANY Bible just can't stand it.
That is a pretty good sign that you have the right Bible.
ALL of grace, believing the Book - The King James Holy Bible.
