The “Circular Reasoning” Circus
We who are King James Bible believers and affirm that God has in fact acted in history in such a way as to give us “the book of the LORD” (Isaiah 34:16) which is the complete, inspired and 100% true words of God are often attacked by those who do NOT believe that ANY Bible in ANY language IS the infallible words of God in print in a real Book you can hold in your hands, read and believe that every word is the inerrant words of God.
They tell us that we are using “circular reasoning”. Here are such comments that I recently ran into at one of the Facebook forums.
A man named William writes: “The KJV is perfect because I say it's perfect, how's that not circular? We've pointed out all the manuscript inconsistencies and you guys have admitted that we no longer have the autographs. So why is the KJV inspired? Because you say so. All the other arguments do not prove infallibility. You reject all the historical manuscript evidence against it, so the only thing you have is your own self claim that it is infallible. Why are you correct? Because you say so, how is that not circular? “
Let’s first define “Circular Reasoning” and then take a look at the position this Bible Agnostic holds to himself.
"Circular Reasoning is an attempt to support a statement by simply repeating the statement in different or stronger terms. In this fallacy, the reason given is nothing more than a restatement of the conclusion that poses as the reason for the conclusion."
So, let’s take this definition and apply it to what this Bible agnostic (He does not know for sure what God did or did not put in His Book) and unbeliever in the infallibility of ANY tangible Bible believes and see if his reasoning is not indeed “circular”.
Let’s ask him the following questions. I will be the Bible Believer (BB) and he will be the Bible Agnostic (BA).
BB - “Do you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose from the dead?”
BA - “Well, Yes, I do.”
BB - “How do you know this is true? There is nothing outside the Bible that tells you this.”
BA - “Because the Bible says that He did.”
BB - “But you don’t believe that ANY Bible in print IS the infallible words of God. So how do you know that Christ died for your sins?”
BA - “Well, uh...because the Bible says He did.” (Circular Reasoning - or NO reasoning at all)
BB - “Why do you take the position that ONLY the originals were inspired and that NO Translation can be the infallible words of God? The Bible doesn’t even mention “the original autographs”.
BA - “Well, that’s what my Seminary Professor (Pastor, respected friend) told me.”
BB - “And how did your Seminary Professor learn this? The Bible doesn’t teach that “only the originals were inspired.”
BA - “Well, that’s what his Seminary Professor told him.” (Circular Reasoning)
You see, folks, the only guys who bring up this lame argument about us Bible believers using “circular reasoning” are those who themselves do NOT believe that ANY Bible in print in ANY language is the complete and infallible words of God. And their very own reasoning for their unbelief in an inerrant Bible is itself “circular”.
The popular saying is true: “If you mess with the Book, God will mess with your mind.”
Or as the Bible puts it: “For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?” 1 Corinthians 1:19-20
By the way, there are LOTS of very good reasons for believing the King James Bible is the true book of the Lord, inspired and infallible.
