Another King James Bible Believer

Acts 2:47 "And the Lord added to the church daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED"

Acts 2:47 KJB reads: “And the Lord added TO THE CHURCH daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”

NIV - “And the Lord added to their number daily THOSE WHO WERE BEING SAVED.”

NKJV - “And the Lord added to the church daily THOSE WHO WERE BEING SAVED.”

Some thoughts on the King James Bible in Acts 2:47

Acts 2:47 KJB - “Praising God, and having favour with all the people. AND THE LORD ADDED TO THE CHURCH SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”

The people who object to the KJB reading (and that of MANY English translations as well) are usually those who are of the Arminian belief system or the “I chose of my own free will to believe the gospel and got saved” persuasion.

Yet, obviously the Greek phrase τους σωζομενους in this context can correctly be translated as “such as SHOULD BE SAVED.”, since so many Bible translators have done so, including the 1582 Catholic Douay-Rheims version - And the Lord increased daily together SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”  And Catholic theology has always been of the “free will” persuasion.

The KJB rendering of this verse is in perfect theological line with the CONTEXT of this passage and with what the Bible itself teaches about how it is God Himself who saves His people and not man who can save himself.

Psalms 65:4 - “Blessed is the man whom thou choosiest, AND CAUSETH TO APPROACH UNTO THEE”

John 10:16 - “And other sheep I HAVE, which are not of this fold: THEM ALSO I MUST BRING, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”

John 17:2 - “As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life TO AS MANY AS THOU HAST GIVEN HIM.”

Acts 13:48 “…AND AS MANY AS WERE ORDAINED TO ETERNAL LIFE BELIEVED.”

The Greek text behind the KJB is different than the one followed by the NIV and other modern Vatican Versions like the ESV, NIV, NASB.

The Traditional Greek Textus Receptus reads: “ο δε κυριος προσετιθει τους σωζομενους καθ ημεραν τη εκκλησια”

But the UBS/Nestle-Aland/Vatican critical text reads: “ο δε κυριος προσετιθει τους σωζομενους καθ ημεραν επι το αυτο”

The main textual difference is that the Majority text, the TR and the Traditional Reformation text has “TO THE CHURCH” (τη εκκλησια) but the modern Vatican Critical text ends with  επι το αυτο , which literally would be something like “upon the same”, not “TO THEIR NUMBER” as the NIV paraphrases it.

But the main thing some object to in this verse is the difference between “such AS SHOULD BE SAVED” verses “THOSE WHO WERE BEING SAVED.”

The Greek for these words is the same in both texts - τους σωζομενους.  It is clearly a passive verb. This means that they were not saving themselves but that somebody else was doing the saving, and clearly this Someone is God Himself. He is the one who is doing the saving and the men who believed the gospel were BEING SAVED by God. Can God’s purpose in saving His elect fail in any way?  Not at all.

Look at the immediate context.  In Acts 2:39 Peter says: "For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, EVEN AS MANY AS THE LORD SHALL CALL."  And in 2:41 we read: "and the same day there WERE ADDED unto them about three thousand souls."

The verb here - "were added" - is in the passive voice. That means that they did not "add themselves" but they were acted upon by an outside force who added them. And of course this outside force was God himself, as 2:47 tells us. "And THE LORD ADDED to the church daily such as should be saved."

"such AS SHOULD BE SAVED"

Not only does the King James Bible read “such AS SHOULD BE SAVED” but so also do the following Bible translations - Tyndale 1534 - “And the Lorde added to ye congregacion dayly SOCHE AS SHULD BE SAVED.”, Coverdale 1535 - “And the LORDE added to the congregacion daylie SOCH AS SHULDE BE SAUED.”, the Great Bible 1540 - “And the Lorde added to þe congregacion dayly, SOCH AS SHULDE BE SAUED.”, Matthew’s Bible 1549 - “And the Lorde added to the congregacion dayly SUCHE AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”,  the Bishops’ Bible 1568 - “the Lorde added to the Churche dayly, SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”, Douay-Rheims Version 1582 - “And the Lord increased daily together SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”, the Geneva Bible 1587 - “the Lorde added to the Church from day to day, SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”, the Beza New Testament 1599, the Bill Bible 1671, Whiston’s N.T. 1745 - “And the Lord added to the church daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”, Worsley Version 1770 - “And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”, The Revised Translation 1815, Webster’s translation 1833 - “And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”, the Hussey N.T. 1845, The Hewett N.T. 1850 - "and the Lord added to their society daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.", the Word of Yah 1993, the KJV 21st Century Version 1994 and the 1998 Third Millennium Bible both read: - “And the Lord added to the church daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED."

Other English Bibles that also read like the KJB are  God's First Truth 1999, the Evidence Bible 2003, the Bond Slave Version 2009, the Hebraic Transliteration Scripture 2010, the 2012 Revised Douay-Rheims N.T., the English Jubilee Bible 2010 has: “And the Lord added to the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED.”, and The Work of God's Children Illustrated N.T. 2011.

Other Bible translations are very similar are Darby’s 1890 translation, which reads: “the Lord added to the assembly daily THOSE THAT WERE TO BE SAVED.” and even the Douay Version of 1950 - “And day by day the Lord added to their company SUCH AS WERE TO BE SAVED.”

The Resurrection Life New Testament 2005 (Vince Garcia) - “And the Lord daily added to the church as many as WHO WERE DESTINED TO BE SAVED.”

Foreign language Bibles that read the same as the KJB are Luther’s German Bible 1545 - “Der HERR aber tat hinzu täglich, die da selig wurden, zu der Gemeinde.” = “The Lord added daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED for the community.”, the Spanish Las Sagradas Escrituras 1569, the Cipriano de Valera Revisada 1865, the Reina Valeras 1909 - 2011,  the Spanish Jubilee Bible 2000 - “Y el Señor añadía cada día a la Iglesia los que habían de ser salvos.” = “The Lord was adding each day to the church THOSE THAT WERE TO BE SAVED.”, the Portuguese Almeida Corregida and A Biblia Sagrada em Portugués - “o Senhor à igreja aqueles que se haviam de salvar.

Some Commentators  thoughts -

John Gill says: “and the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved: partly by the conversation of these young converts, and chiefly by the ministry of the word, many souls were won and gained to Christ, were wrought upon, and converted, whose hearts the Lord inclined to give up themselves to the church, and walk with them in all the ordinances and commandments of the Lord; and these were such whom God had chosen to salvation by Jesus Christ, and whom he had redeemed by his precious blood, and who were now regenerated and sanctified by the Spirit of God, AND SO SHOULD CERTAINLY BE SAVED; which is not always the case of persons added to churches, many of whom have not the root of the matter in them, and so fall away; but is of THOSE WHO ARE ADDED BY THE LORD, for there is a difference between being added by the Lord, and being added by men.”

Matthew Henry - “Some or other were daily coming in, though not so many as the first day and they were SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED. Note, Those that God has designed for eternal salvation shall one time or other be effectually brought to Christ: and those that are brought to Christ are added to the church”

Paul Kretzmann’s  A Popular Commentary (a Lutheran) - “Luke expressly states that the Lord added SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED to the congregation. The conversion of every person is the Lord's doing all alone, and is the result of His gracious and good will for the salvation of sinners.”

Matthew Poole’s Commentary - The Lord added to the church; salvation is, to be sure,  only from the Lord; not Peter’s sermons, no, nor the miracles of fiery cloven tongues, and the rushing mighty wind, could have converted any, but the powerful operation of the Spirit of God in their hearts.”

Charles Spurgeon - “Praising God, and having favor with all his people. And the lord added to the church daily SUCH AS SHOULD BE SAVED"  - May he do the like unto all our churches, and he shall have the glory world without end! Amen.”

John Trapp’s Complete Commentary - “. Such as should be saved -  Heirs of the kingdom. Heads destinated to the diadem, saith Tertullian.”

The King James Bible is right, as always, and it exalts the saving grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ like no other. It is the only English Bible still believed today by thousands of blood bought saints of God to be His complete, inspired, inerrant and 100% true words of God.

All of grace, believing the Book,
